The Witchcraft of Narcissism
How to Identify the Spells
Manipulation isn't magic — but it works like a spell. It bends what you see, what you feel, and what you believe about yourself. This framework gives you a vocabulary for what was done to you: twelve spells, and the twelve ways to break each one.
None of this is mysticism. Every "spell" here is a real, documented manipulation tactic — dressed in the language of witchcraft because that's how it felt: something worked on you that you couldn't see, couldn't name, and couldn't fight. Naming a thing is the beginning of breaking it. Read these as stories, not lectures. When one lands, you'll know.
The Twelve Spells
The Glamour
What It Is
A glamour spell doesn't change the object — it changes what your EYES see. The narcissist isn't caring, but you see care. The spell is on YOUR perception, not on them. The gap between what IS and what you SEE is where the glamour lives.
How It Works
You aren't tricked about the world — you're tricked about them. They stay the same; your seeing is bent. Every time reality pokes through, the glamour smooths it over before you can hold it. So you keep defending someone who isn't there.
The Parable
For two years she'd walk into a room and he'd feel warmth flood him — his person, finally. Then one ordinary Tuesday she said the same soft thing she always said, and he heard it flat. No warmth. Just words. "You don't look the same to me anymore," he told a friend later. He wasn't falling out of love. The glamour was wearing off.
The Glamour–Gaslighting Connection
The glamour doesn't just change how the NARCISSIST looks — it changes how EVERYTHING looks. The partner looks beautiful. The surroundings look beautiful. The life looks beautiful. And critically, it makes YOU feel LUCKY — like you got the prize, like you're beneath them, like you should be grateful they're even there.
This is why gaslighting works so well: you are ALREADY not seeing reality. The glamour hijacks perception FIRST. So when the narcissist says "that didn't happen" or "you're imagining things," you accept it — your perception is already compromised. Denying one more piece of reality doesn't feel wrong. It feels consistent.
You cannot gaslight someone who sees clearly. The glamour creates the blindness; the gaslighting maintains it. Glamour is the infection. Gaslighting is the symptom that tells you you're not sick.
The "lucky" feeling creates the dependency: if you're lucky to have them, questioning them risks losing them. The glamour builds the power dynamic (you're beneath, they're the prize); the gaslighting exploits it (you can't fight back, because fighting back might lose the "beautiful" thing you were "lucky" to get).
These are not separate tactics — they are ONE SYSTEM. Glamour is the setup; gaslighting is the maintenance. When the spell breaks — "when I look at her, she doesn't look the same" — the glamour wears off EVERYTHING at once: the partner, the surroundings, the "lucky" feeling, the whole false reality. The gap between what you SAW and what WAS is where the trauma lives.
Break the Spell
Naming the glamour breaks it. The moment you say it out loud, the enchantment loses its grip. "When I look at her, she doesn't look the same" — that flicker is the glamour wearing off. Trust it.
The Intrinsic Counterfeit
What It Is
Real intrinsic connection is two minds syncing honestly. The counterfeit is mimicking that sync through mirroring — reflecting your values and energy back at you until it FEELS like connection. It isn't. It's reconnaissance.
How It Works
They learn your frequency so they can hijack it. Your favorite films become theirs. Your wounds become the thing they "also" survived. It lands as "finally, someone who gets me" — because it's built from your own reflection.
The Parable
In week three she finished his sentences. Same music, same politics, same childhood ache. He'd never felt so seen. By month six, the mirror slipped: she'd say she loved his ambition, then roll her eyes every time he worked late. The words still matched him. The actions had stopped. That was the reconnaissance ending and the real person showing through.
The Science of Intrinsic Connection — Neural Coupling
In 2009, the Max Planck Institute proved that when guitarists play a duet, their brain waves literally synchronize. When a band plays together, ALL their brains align — five musicians, five brains, one synchronized pattern. This is "neural coupling": genuine connection at the biological level.
When you feel "on the same wavelength" as someone, your brains are LITERALLY firing in sync — not a metaphor, but measurable electrical patterns matching in real time. Studies show that at a live concert, the audience's brain waves synchronize with each other AND with the musicians. The audience and the band become one brain. That's why live music feels different — your brain is literally syncing with everyone in the room.
THIS is the real intrinsic: genuine neural coupling, two or more brains firing in synchrony. That's what connection IS at the biological level.
The Counterfeit: A One-Way Sync
The sync is ONE-WAY. The victim's brain syncs to the narcissist — because the victim is genuinely connecting; their mirror neurons fire, their neural patterns align. But the narcissist's brain doesn't sync back. They're not connecting — they're OBSERVING. Studying. Calculating. While the victim's brain does the real work of neural coupling, the narcissist's brain does the work of EXTRACTION.
Brains firing in sync — measurable electrical patterns matching in real time.
The biological mechanism of genuine connection between two or more brains.
The feeling of being "on the same wavelength" — which is literally what's happening.
That's why the relationship feels so REAL to the victim and so EMPTY to the narcissist. The victim is experiencing genuine neural coupling — but coupling with a wall, not a mirror. The victim is playing the duet alone: their brain is making the music, the narcissist's brain is taking notes. Your genuine capacity for connection is being used AGAINST you. The narcissist creates the illusion of synchrony without the reality — they perform resonance without ever experiencing it.
Break the Spell
Time breaks it. Mirroring can't hold, because the performer doesn't actually share your values. Watch the gap between what they SAY and what they DO — the counterfeit shows its seams the moment the two stop matching.
The Hypothesis
What It Is
Planting a suggestion about what could be. "I'm getting a gym." "We'll do this together." Making you build your expectations around a future that will never arrive.
How It Works
The hypothesis keeps you invested in a present that is destroying you, because you're not living in the present — you're living in the described future. As long as you're waiting for it, you'll tolerate almost anything now.
The Parable
"When the gym's up and running, I'll have time for us." She said it in spring. Then: "After the busy season." Then: "Once I've paid this off." He kept adjusting his life around a gym that never opened. One night he wrote down every promise and its date. None had happened. That was the moment the hypothesis lost its power — he started counting what was real.
Break the Spell
Only count what has ACTUALLY happened, not what was described. Track actions, not words. A future that is always six weeks away is not a future — it's a leash made of maybe.
The Hypnosis
What It Is
"I'm tired" said seven times is not a complaint — it's a hypnotic suggestion. A mantra. Say something enough times and the listener stops hearing the words and starts FEELING the suggestion.
How It Works
The carrier gets hijacked by the repetition. You don't argue with it because it doesn't feel like an argument — it feels like weather. Slowly their state becomes your state, installed one repetition at a time.
The Parable
"I'm exhausted." "I'm so drained." "I have nothing left." By evening he felt heavy too, though he'd done nothing tiring. Then he actually counted — she'd said some version of it eleven times before noon. Once he could count it, it stopped being a fog he was inside and became a thing she was doing. The heaviness lifted the instant he saw it.
Break the Spell
Count the repetitions. The moment you notice "she's said this seven times today" — the trance breaks. Counting turns the mantra back into mere words, and words you can question.
The Body Hijack
What It Is
The spell moves from the ears (hypnosis) to the eyes (glamour) to the BODY. You feel tired when you're not. You crave substances to fight an exhaustion that was installed, not earned. The suggestion takes residence in your body.
How It Works
Once it's in the body, it feels like truth — because your body is telling you it's true. But installed exhaustion doesn't respond to rest the way real exhaustion does. It responds to breaking the suggestion.
The Parable
He'd slept nine hours and still felt like lead. Reaching for coffee, then something stronger, just to function around her. One afternoon she went out and he went for a walk instead of a drink. Ten minutes in, the leaden feeling was gone. It had never been his body — it was hers, living in his. Movement evicted it.
Break the Spell
Ask: "Am I tired, or have I been TOLD I'm tired?" Separate genuine exhaustion from installed exhaustion. Move your body. Real tired responds to rest; installed tired responds to breaking the suggestion.
The Divination
What It Is
The narcissist reads you. Studies your cracks. Learns your history. "She picked me because I had a drug history." They don't love you — they're divining your weakness so they know where to press.
How It Works
What feels like deep interest is a survey. Every vulnerable thing you share becomes a map of where you can be moved, shamed, or controlled. The intimacy is data collection.
The Parable
She asked, gently, about the worst year of his life — the relapse, the rehab, the wreckage. He told her everything. Later, every disagreement came laced with "well, given your history…" until he realized she'd never been listening with care. She'd been mapping the fault lines. So he changed the story he told himself: "I survived that. It makes me an expert on my own resilience." There was nothing left for her to press.
Break the Spell
Your history is not a crack — it's a credential. The things you survived are proof of strength. The moment you own your past as expertise instead of shame, the divination fails: there's nothing left to press on.
The Hex
What It Is
The curse on your reputation. Isolating you from support. Making others see you through the narcissist's version of you. Cutting your supply lines so no one is left to reflect reality back to you.
How It Works
The hex works by controlling the mirrors around you. If everyone who knows you has been fed the story first, you can't find your own reflection anywhere. Alone with only their version, you start to believe it.
The Parable
By the time he noticed, half his friends had cooled toward him and he didn't know why. She'd gotten there first, everywhere. He couldn't out-argue a story told behind his back. So he stopped trying to fix the poisoned wells and dug new ones — a running club, a night class, people who'd never heard her version. In those clean mirrors he finally recognized himself again.
Break the Spell
Build connections OUTSIDE the hex's reach. New people. A clean slate. No backstory. People who see only what you actually show them — untouched mirrors that reflect the real you back.
The Necromancy
What It Is
Bringing up your past. Your mistakes. Your history. "Don't use drugs" — not because she cares, but to remind you of your lowest point while positioning herself as the one who cares. Resurrecting your dead selves to keep you in the grave of who you were.
How It Works
She keeps digging up the person you used to be and setting him next to you, so you can never fully stand as the person you've become. Every old self she resurrects is a chain to a grave you already climbed out of.
The Parable
"I just don't want you slipping back — you know how you get," she'd say, in front of people, three years clean. Each time, the old him rose up beside him like a ghost, and he'd shrink. Then he saw the trick: she wasn't protecting him, she was reanimating a corpse to keep him small. "That man is dead," he told himself. "I buried him. I'm the one who did the burying." The ghost stopped answering her call.
Break the Spell
Your past is not your present. Own the past as a credential, not a curse. The dead selves she keeps summoning are proof of how far you've walked — not evidence of where you still belong.
The Rescue Spell
What It Is
The endgame. Engineer the collapse. Wait for you to have nothing. Then swoop in as the saviour — with a job, a car, resources. The rescue IS the leash. You can't question the saviour, because questioning the saviour means losing the lifeline.
How It Works
By the time you're rescued, you've forgotten the collapse was arranged. Gratitude becomes the cage. Every doubt gets silenced by "but look at everything they've done for me" — which is exactly what the rescue was built to buy.
The Parable
First the job fell through — on her advice. Then the money, the friends, the flat, one after another, each with her fingerprints he couldn't quite see. When she handed him a car and a place to stay, he wept with gratitude. Months later he mapped the timeline and went cold: she hadn't saved him from the wreck. She'd built it. So he did one thing entirely on his own — found his own work, no strings — and the leash of gratitude simply fell off.
Break the Spell
See the siege before the walls fall. The collapse was engineered. The rescue was planned. You don't need a saviour — you need one thing done, by you, for yourself. Self-rescue breaks the spell, because a lifeline you built can't be used as a leash.
The Inhabitation
What It Is
The narcissist installs their voice INSIDE your head. Sam Vaknin calls these "introjects" — the narcissist plants their "death voice" in you. After enough time, you can't tell which thoughts are yours and which are theirs. Their voice becomes your inner critic.
How It Works
The spell moves from outside you to INSIDE you. "Don't use drugs" — you hear it in HER voice even when she's nowhere near. Long after the relationship ends, the commentary continues. You've been left with a tenant who never pays rent and never leaves.
The Parable
Two years after she was gone, he'd reach for a normal decision and hear it — that flat, disappointed tone: "You always mess this up." It felt like his own thought until the day he heard it clearly and thought, wait — that's not how I talk to myself. That's her. He started catching it: "her voice, not mine." Named as a foreign tenant, it got quieter every week. The house was his again.
Break the Spell
Identify the voice. Ask: "Is this MY thought, or HER voice?" The moment you can tell her voice from yours, the inhabitation loses its grip. The inner voice was installed — and anything installed can be uninstalled, once you name it as foreign.
The Theft
What It Is
They don't just mirror — they STEAL. They study what makes you valuable — your love without boundaries, your loyalty, your carrying, your way of making people feel like people — and extract those traits. Psychologists call it "psychological identity theft." The narcissist is a carnivorous plant that consumes identity.
How It Works
They take your traits and wear them as a costume for their next source. You're left diminished, hollowed out, wondering who you even were before the theft — because the very qualities that made you you are now walking around on someone else.
The Parable
After she left, he felt robbed — like she'd walked off with his warmth, his patience, the exact way he made people feel safe, and was now using all of it on someone new. For months he felt empty, as if there were nothing left to give. Then he helped a stranger, instinctively, the old way — and it was still there. It regenerated. She'd taken a bucket from a spring and called it the whole river. The spring never stopped.
Break the Spell
You can't un-steal what was taken — but you can GENERATE more. The narcissist is a finite thief; they can only steal what already exists. You generate endlessly. What they stole runs out. What you create doesn't. Your identity was never a fixed amount they took — it's a spring they tapped, and the spring keeps flowing.
The Doppelganger
What It Is
They take your stolen traits and build a new false self. They live as a version of YOU — wearing your caring, your generosity, your attention — and present it to their next source. The false reality they inhabit is built entirely from YOUR pieces.
How It Works
That's why they can fake love so convincingly: they studied YOUR love for years and learned its shape without ever feeling its substance. What the next person falls for isn't the narcissist — it's a hollow reproduction of you.
The Parable
He saw them out together, the new person glowing the way he once had. It gutted him — until he watched closely. The gestures were his, but timed a half-second late, warmth switched on like a light rather than radiating. A copy of a copy. He knew how that story ended, because he'd lived the original. The performance would exhaust her, as it always did. He was the real thing. She was running out of him.
Break the Spell
The doppelganger always breaks, because it's a copy of a copy. The stolen traits degrade — they can't sustain your love because they never felt it. They're performing a stolen identity, and performance exhausts the performer. The original outlasts the copy. Always.
The Science Underneath
Neural coupling is real — in genuine connection, two brains synchronize through mirror neurons. The narcissist weaponizes this biological mechanism. They sync brains (the counterfeit intrinsic), install their voice (the inhabitation), steal traits (the theft), and leave carrying your identity to build their false self (the doppelganger). The victim is left hollowed out: carrying the narcissist's voice in their head, missing the traits that were extracted, watching the narcissist perform a version of them for someone else. Naming the mechanism is the first step to reversing it.

The Cord Cut
No Contact as the Master Counter-Spell
Every spell in this framework requires one thing: ACCESS. No contact cuts ALL channels at once. It's the master switch that cuts power to the entire system.
The Glamour needs you to SEE them. No contact = the glamour can't refresh. It fades.
The Hypnosis needs repetition. No contact = the mantra loses its rhythm and dies.
The Inhabitation needs reinforcement. No contact = the installed voice weakens. Your own voice returns.
The Body Hijack needs a maintained suggestion. No contact = your body resets to YOUR exhaustion, not theirs.
The Hypothesis needs future promises. No contact = the old promises expire and rot.
The Theft needs continued access to study you. No contact = they're working with outdated material.
The Hex needs information flowing back through their network. No contact = no new data for the flying monkeys.
The Rescue Spell needs you to collapse. No contact = you rebuild instead. The saviour has nobody to save.
The Doppelganger needs your behavior to model. No contact = they're performing a version of you that no longer exists.
One Contact Reactivates Everything
One contact reactivates ALL dormant spells. Even a text. Even 30 seconds of seeing them. Even a voicemail. The glamour refreshes, the hypnosis restarts, the inhabitation gets reinforced. One contact can undo months of recovery — the spells were designed to re-activate instantly.
No contact is not a boundary. It's a siege breaker. The narcissist laid siege to you; no contact is you laying siege to the spells inside you. Cut the supply line and wait. The spells starve. The voice fades. The exhaustion lifts. The real you comes back.
No contact is not silence — it's starvation. The spells are still installed, but they're dying because the installer can't refresh them. Every day of no contact is a day the spells weaken and the real you strengthens.
The Same Truth, Two Languages
The Witchcraft of Narcissism framework was developed from lived experience — not textbooks. But it maps precisely to the work of Sam Vaknin, the foremost theorist on narcissistic abuse, who coined the terms "narcissistic abuse" and "no contact" in the 1980s.
Entrainment is the process where the narcissist syncs the victim's brain to their frequency through repetition. The victim's brain becomes "trained" to respond to the narcissist. That's what "I'm tired" ×7 does — it ENTRAINS the victim's brain to feel exhaustion.
The narcissist implants their introject — their voice — inside the victim's mind. After enough entrainment, the introject takes root. The victim hears the narcissist's voice even when the narcissist is absent.
Vaknin says the shared fantasy is NOT a relationship — it's a "psychic merger." The narcissist doesn't connect; they MERGE, consume the victim's identity, and live through them. This is the counterfeit intrinsic — the fake brain sync.
Vaknin coined "no contact" in the 1980s. This framework independently arrived at the same conclusion: cutting access cuts power to the entire system.
It's a Translation, Not a Replacement
The difference between Vaknin's framework and this one is LANGUAGE. His terms are clinical — "introject," "entrainment," "shared fantasy." The Witchcraft of Narcissism translates these into language abuse victims already use in their gut: "it felt like a spell," "I was bewitched," "she cast a glamour on me." A person in the middle of abuse can't Google "introject" — they don't know the word exists. But they KNOW what a glamour spell feels like. They KNOW what possession feels like. The framework doesn't replace the science — it TRANSLATES it into the language of the people who need it.
If the science matches the experience, then the experience IS the science. You don't need a degree to know what happened to you. You need the vocabulary to name it. That's what this framework provides.
Recovery from the Spells
The 12 spells name what happened. These 12 recovery paths tell you how to heal from each one — lived-experience recovery, not clinical theory. One survivor to another.
Recovery from Glamour
The glamour made you doubt what you saw — you saw care where there was control. Start small: name what's in front of you RIGHT NOW. "I see a table. I see a wall. I see my hands." Rebuild the connection between your eyes and reality one object at a time. The glamour made everything look beautiful; recovery is accepting what actually IS — even when it isn't.
Recovery from Intrinsic Counterfeit
After being mirrored for years, you don't trust your own feeling of connection. Real connection DEEPENS over time; fake connection FADES. Give new relationships time to prove themselves. Don't rush the feeling of "sync" — let consistency do the proving. If it's real, it grows. If it's counterfeit, it exhausts the performer.
Recovery from Hypothesis
The hypothesis kept you living in a future that never came. Today only: "What can I do TODAY? What is real RIGHT NOW?" The future will be built by todays, not by promises. Stop feeding the hypothesis with hope — feed TODAY with action.
Recovery from Hypnosis
The repetition installed a mantra in your head. Sit in silence. No input. No voices. No music. Just you and your own thoughts. At first the installed voice will be loud. Over time, your own voice returns — the mantra fades without repetition to sustain it.
Recovery from Body Hijack
The hijack made your body feel things that weren't yours — installed exhaustion, induced cravings. MOVE. Walk. Work. Build. Your body remembers what REAL exhaustion feels like. The more you move, the more the installed exhaustion burns off and real energy returns. Real tired responds to rest; installed tired responds to breaking the suggestion through action.
Recovery from Divination
They divined your cracks and used them against you. Your history is not a crack — it's a credential. Everything you survived is proof of strength, not evidence of weakness. Tell your story. The shame only works in silence. The moment you own your past out loud, the divination fails — you can't exploit what someone has already claimed.
Recovery from Hex
The hex isolated you. New people. Clean slate. No backstory. People who see only what you show them. Each new connection is a mirror the hex can't control. Build 1,500 miles away if you have to — the hex can't reach where the narcissist has no ears.
Recovery from Necromancy
They resurrected your dead selves to keep you small. Who are you RIGHT NOW? Not who you were. Not what you did. Who are you TODAY? Your past is a credential, not a curse. The necromancer needs you to believe the dead self is the real self. It isn't. The real self is the one who survived the dead self.
Recovery from Rescue Spell
They made you believe you needed saving. One thing — even if it's wrong. Do ONE thing for yourself today. Each thing you do for yourself is proof you don't need a saviour. You need a stamp, not a saviour. Independence is the final recovery — not from the narcissist, but from the BELIEF that you need them.
Recovery from Inhabitation
Their voice became your inner critic. Ask: "Is this MY thought, or THEIR voice?" When you catch the installed voice, name it out loud: "That's not me. That's her." Over time the foreign voice becomes distinguishable. What was invisible becomes visible, what was unnamable becomes named — and what is named can be removed.
Recovery from Theft
They stole your traits — your caring, your loyalty, your love. You are not a vault that was emptied. You are a SPRING. What was stolen can be regenerated. Create. Build. Love. Each new act of creation generates identity the thief can't take, because it didn't exist when they were watching. The narcissist is a finite thief; the carrier generates endlessly.
Recovery from Doppelganger
They're performing a version of you to someone else. You're the original — and the original keeps changing, growing, evolving. The copy is frozen at the moment of theft. You've already moved past who they stole; they're performing last year's you. Let them. You're already next year's you. A copy of a copy degrades. The original outlasts the copy. Always.
The Recovery Principle
Lived experience IS the credential. This is not clinical theory — it's testimony. The person who survived the spell is the authority on recovery from the spell. One survivor talking to another, not a doctor talking to a patient. Your experience outranks every textbook on the shelf. What you might call "just your experience" is exactly what someone else needs to hear to know they're not crazy, they're not alone, and they're not stuck.
Recovery From the Root
The foundation beneath all twelve. Heal this, and every other counter-spell becomes possible. Skip it, and the rest only treat symptoms.
"I would love out of fear which is ego driven and deep down I didn't trust love — so I picked, subconsciously, those who didn't want to heal, giving myself a reason not to love myself."
Every spell we mapped was about what the narcissist did. But they couldn't have installed a single one without a crack. Not the addiction history — that was the surface crack. The real crack was the belief that love isn't safe. The narcissist didn't create the crack. They found it.
The Pattern — A Self-Reinforcing Loop
The loop runs for decades. You pick people who don't want to heal because their inability to love you confirms your belief that love isn't real. Their failure becomes your evidence. Their inability to love you becomes your reason to not love yourself.
Fear-Love Isn't Love — It's Control
The ego's version
"I need you, so I love you."
The real version
"I love you, so I don't need you."
When you love out of fear, you're not giving love — you're handing a leash to someone you hope will hold it gently. But the people who don't want to heal don't hold gently. They pull.
The Recovery — Run the Loop Backwards
Love out of trust, not fear. Choose someone who wants to heal. Love yourself first — so you don't need someone else's failure to justify not loving yourself. When you love yourself, you stop choosing people who can't love you, because you no longer need proof that love doesn't work. You already know it does. You give it to yourself first.
The narcissist saw the crack and used it. The survivor sees the same crack and heals it.
Same wound, different choice. Both see the crack. One exploits. One heals.
